Snow Leopard Expedition - Winter Spiti - 2025 Diaries
Faces that smiled, stories that became memories.
Moments that made us
feel alive
We start our day early, as we start with our journey to Spiti with the Chandigarh - Rampur leg.
Today, we’ll be leaving the city behind to move into the mountains, with great views of Churdhar peak, and Himalayas in the distance as we pass through Narkanda, and then move into the Satluj valley to reach Rampur. It is a town on the banks of Satluj river, 130 Kms from Shimla and also home to Padam Palace, standing in the capital of erstwhile Bushahr Kingdom.
Streets of Rampur still retain its old culture, while the palace is filled with history, and a glimpse into the past will be a great way to have a relaxing start to the trip.
This is going to be a long day, since we’ll be moving on towards Spiti, crossing Kinnaur on our way, and bidding goodbye to vegetation filled mountains, and saying hello to the barren landscapes of higher Himalayas.
We’ll be crossing Kinnaur region, Hangrang valley, bidding goodbye to Satluj river, and will eventually find ourselves journeying along the Spiti river.
Today is all about magnificent views on the way, and observing the changes in the landscape on the way as we move from lower ranges to the valleys along the highest of the Himachal Himalayas. We end the day in a homestay in Tabo, experiencing the comforts of a local life.
After the long drive yesterday, today we wake up in Tabo, amidst the tall cliffs and Spiti Valley's surreal landscape. After a relaxed breakfast, we visit the 1000 year old Tabo Monastery in the centre of the town, and then start our journey to Pin Valley.
While most of Pin Valley gets snow covered in the winters, we will go as far as the road allows. The views here are surreal, and some of the highest amounts of snow we would see.
We then drive to Kaza, the administrative capital of Spiti and check-in to our homestay by afternoon.
After an early breakfast, we will head to the Ki Monastery, the most iconic sight in Spiti Valley. We will then head to Kibber village, once the highest village connected with a motorable road. From here, we will head to the new Chicham bridge, and finally arrive at our homestay in Chicham village.
We meet our guide at the homestay in Chicham, and will learn more about what we have in store for the coming days, plus will get a chance to explore the village, learning a little about the local culture.
We begin the day early, with a 2-3 hour long walk.
Our walk in snow-clad Mountains will bring us close to the region where sighting snow leopards has higher probability.
We camp there for the day, observing and photographing the wildlife, and also some great landscapes. We’ll end this day at our homestay in Chicham.
We once again leave for Snow Leopard sighting, spending our time in the snowclad wildwerness of Spiti. We return to Chicham village to the warmth of our homestay by evening.
It's another day of sighting the elusive snow leopard. We once again leave for sighting with our spotters, and spend our time in the snowclad wilderness of Spiti. At the end of the day, we return to Chicham village for one last night in Spiti Valley.
We bid goodbye to Spiti, and begin our descend towards lower regions of Himachal.
It’ll again be a long day, ending at our hotel in Rampur, where a slightly warmer climate will welcome us.
The last leg of the trip, as we complete the journey from Rampur to Chandigarh. We’ll reach Chandigarh by evening, bringing this Spiti Valley sojourn to an end.
